Ward 7 and Ward 8 Community Board—by and for the community

Ever wonder what events are happening in Wards 7 and 8?   Now it's easy to find out with the new Ward 7 and Ward 8 Community Board on the East Bank DC website.

The Community Board is a new tool for and by the community to promote community events and activities.   Read the Community Board today and you will see several standing community meetings and the Arcadia Mobile Markets through October 30, 2015.   Read it tomorrow and (hopefully) you will find more events.

East Bank DC blogger Marie Fritz created the Community Board following a conversation on Twitter about encouraging more and better communication with residents about community-based events.   Fritz explains,

There is so much happening in Wards 7 and 8 but it's difficult to keep track of multiple calendars, electronic flyers, emails, and notifications. I hope the Community Board will enable organizations to reach a wider audience and to make it easier for our neighbors to stay informed and to engage with one another in their community.

Almost all events can be included in this new calendar.   To be added to the calendar, events must take place in Wards 7 or 8 and be open to the general public.   Events can be sponsored by the community or government and can include meetings, fairs and festivals; resident input sessions; and nonprofit fundraisers.

To be effective, the calendar needs information and users.   Submitting event information is easy and the steps are detailed on the calendar page.   And people will use the calendar when they become aware of it and the role it plays in keeping residents in Wards 7 and 8 informed.   If you have a blog or website, consider adding the badge (shown above).   Need to know how?   Here are the instructions.

There are other ways to tell your friends, clients, customers, members, and others about the Community Board.   Washington Parks & People, as you can see below, Tweeted the news.   Another option is to post this flyer in your waiting area or include it in a newsletter.   Share other ideas in a comment!

TA: Effective Twitter searches

The one word journalists should add to Twitter searches that you probably haven’t considered is written for a journo audience.   But the fact is that the one word applies to anyone doing a particular type of Twitter search.   The word author Daniel Victor suggests is not, however, applicable to all searches.   But I like the piece because it reminds us to think beyond the words we normally would use.   Writes Victor,
Here's the main takeaway: Imagine what your perfect source would tweet, or what you yourself would tweet in that situation, and search for the words that would probably be in it. And be sure you’re not limiting that to the SEO keywords.

New staffer at Department of Housing and Community Development

May 2: Participate in the Tenant Town Hall

Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) is holding the 8th Annual Tenant Town Hall Saturday, May 2 from Noon - 3:00 pm at All Souls Unitarian Church (1500 Harvard St NW, corner of 16th/Harvard Sts NW).

The areas of focus of the event―under the broad umbrella of fighting for tenant rights and affordable housing―are strengthening rent control, supporting tenant purchase and the city's Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), and the preservation of subsidized housing.

Ward 7, get your communication on

A number of Ward 7 residents, ANCs, and community activists have been talking on Twitter about improving communications with and among Ward 7 residents and stakeholders.   One of this merry band, Justin Lini, recently sent the following email to his ANC 7D colleagues.   With his permission, I am sharing the email:
Everyone knows its hard to get the word out about news and events impacting Ward 7. So, let's do something about it!

I've been working with Susie Cambria (http://susiecambria.blogspot.com/ if you're not familiar with her blog) to build an online database of our ward's physical bulletin boards, online listservs and social media sites. This list will be available to the public and hopefully will be a resource to government and our community.

It looks like we're making good progress for the online sources (but you should make sure your neighborhood isn't left off), what we really need help with are places we can post flyers. For example many apartment buildings and some stores have bulletin boards that no one outside of that building would know about. Ideally we would have the board listed as well as a contact.

Perhaps we could also build a list of people who are interested in distributing flyers as well? The more resources the better.

DHCD #dcfy16 budget hearing Storified

Designing for everyone


The Medium post 7 Things Every Designer Needs to Know about Accessibility got me thinking (again) about ways to better communicate with all sorts of people, online, on paper, and IRL.   I readily admit I'm not a design or communications expert.   But like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart and porn, I (often) know good and bad design when I see it.

Let's start with my thoughts about the Medium post (in no order):

  • Color.   Jesse Hausler has several pieces of advice for color.   The first is "Don’t use color as the only visual means of conveying information."   The way I think about this is with printed materials.   What happens when someone prints your flyer in black and white or in grayscale?   Can readers tell what is important or not?   Certainly, online, designers can add clues (such as error state marks―that's what the triangles with exclamation points are called).   In print, this is more challenging but most certainly worth addressing.

    Hausler's second bit of advice for color is to ensure sufficient contrast AND to use an accessible color palette.   Both are important and with the tools Hausler links, it's easy for you to check the accessibility of your website and blog.

    Here's what I would add to the color discussion, albeit not from an accessibility perspective: Do use color but use it judiciously.   Meaning: Don't use a color background on a flyer if you expect people/organizations to print it out themselves.   No one wants to use that much ink and it's just bad design.   Use color where color is important.   In my experience, flyers are made to look good first.   Instead, they should convey the information first, using design (and color) to make the information understandable, etc.

  • Forms.   Jesse Hausler walks readers through the do's and don'ts of forms.   And while I understand little about the technical stuff, I understand the bigger ideas.   So read and share with your web designer.

Less about online design and more about content and illustrating content is Beyond the Written Word: Health Literacy and the Role of Pictures.   Ken Thorlton, content and messaging expert in the health field, explains how the judicious and appropriate use of images can help people better understand and implement content.   While most of the studies Thorlton cites are behind a paywalls, here is the results summary of one:

Both sets of these simple written materials were generally well understood. However, the presence of pictograms was shown to improve the comprehension of more complex information, resulting in significantly more participants in the experimental group obtaining a score for understanding >80% for both the medicine label and PIL. A clear preference for the materials incorporating pictograms was expressed.

Another study finds positive action related to images.

Just because findings support the use of images, however, images, especially gratuitous clipart, should not take over any flyer, postcard, or poster.   Graphics should complement the text.   And white space is our friend.

Finally, to the latest of fads that is just plain bad: Content in images only.   While images are easy to share in email and on websites and blogs, they are a bear for users.   What I mean: If I want to attend the event, I have to retype the important information into my calendar.   Okay, not a huge big deal.   But if there is a lot of content AND I want to share it, it's a pain.   And why should I have to do the work for someone else?

At a minimum, those who share image files (.png, .bmp, .jpg) should also share the text in those files.   An alternative is to create a cool logo or small graphic with the subject or event name and have all the text available in text form.

And yes, I have committed this offense.   So I, too, have to do better.

April 20: DC Town Hall Hearing on Women and Girls of Color

You are invited to participate in the Monday, April 20 DC Town Hall Hearing on Women and Girls of Color sponsored by the African American Policy Forum.   The hearing takes place from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at the Howard Middle School of Mathematics and Science (405 Howard Pl NW in the Theatre).

The purpose of this and other hearings is to bring "circumstances facing girls and women of color out of the shadows and squarely into public policy debates."

From the invitation:

Women and girls of color will provide testimony across a range of issue areas, including school push-out, incarceration, public and private violence, trafficking, foster care, economic wellbeing and homelessness. Key decision makers will participate in the hearings as commissioners to suggest and advance tangible interventions.

Historically, government hearings have been held on men and boys of color, generating a deeper understanding among stakeholders of their specific needs. These hearings have led to increased public will and ultimately, the development of the black male achievement landscape we see today. Through hosting similar hearings on women and girls of color, we hope to increase our nation’s collective understanding of the disparities they experience, both those that are common to and different from their male counterparts.

Share your memories of Sheridan Theater

The DC Independent Film Festival has received a DCPL grant to collect an oral history of The Sheridan Theater (now the dollar store) at 6200 Georgia Avenue as part of our city-wide "Going to the Movies" project. The Sheridan was an important neighborhood meeting place before 1976 and remains an historically important building.

We are now ready to collect those memories!

So please, if you remember going to The Sheridan Theater or you know others who might, help us to fill in a missing part of DC cultural history. We have our notebooks and tape-recorders and movie cameras ready and next week we can visit you to capture those memories.

Calling Ward 7 businesses and residents to important April 14 meeting

Plan on attending the Tuesday, April 14 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Ward 7 check-in meeting.   The purpose of the meeting is for residents, business owners, and others to tell DHCD representatives about housing, business, community development, and resource needs of this community.   It takes place at Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (3939 Benning Rd NE).

DHCD will take the opportunity to tell residents, business owners, and other community members about the agency’s programs and services, current and future projects, and the proposed FY 2016 affordable housing budget.

The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) has just released 2013-2014 Biennial Report.   Some of the accomplishments highlighted in the report are:
Preventing discrimination in health care One of the department's actions in early 2014 advanced the rights of the city's transgender community by prohibiting discrimination in health insurance based on gender identity and expression. The department issued a bulletin requiring District health insurance companies to provide coverage for gender dysphoria, or gender identity disorder, as a recognized medical condition thereby permitting those with gender dysphoria to obtain medically necessary benefits.

East River Family Strengthening Collaborative has launched the Girl's Biz Academy as part of the new ERFSC Small Business Development and Leadership Academy.   According to the application form (PDF) for Girl's Biz, the "Academy serves as a hub of resources as well as provides technical assistance, support and one-on-one mentoring for participants."   Girl's Biz, says the flyer (PDF), is an "initiative for Ward 7 female business owners to transform challenges into opportunities and strengthen internal capacities."

Applications are due Wednesday, April 15.

Digitally Connected: Global Perspectives on Youth and Digital Media, released by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and Youth and Media, is a collaborative effort involving UNICEF.

The book contains more than 30 essays about various aspects of young people and the online world.   Topics considered include civic engagement, safety, identify, privacy, and innovation.   Authors represent a number of fields such as technology, academia, and government.

Timeline, according to Journalist's Resource,

helps you build visually attractive chronologies. You simply fill out a Google spreadsheet template and drop in dates, links and associated media. The application’s Embed Generator then creates code that you cut and paste into your website, allowing you to host the timeline. TA: New Facebook app, Riff, allows video co-production

Use video?   Facebook has a new way to create collaborative videos:   Riff.   The app, available for iPhone and Android phones, allows friends to add to videos shot by friends.

Save the date: September 5 for National Book Festival

Plan on staying in town Saturday, September 5 to attend the National Book Festival at the Washington Convention Center.

On March 24, the festival planners announced the pavilions and authors.   In the Children's Pavilion will be Mac Barnett, Cece Bell, Jenny Han, William Joyce, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, Naomi Shihab Nye, Gary Paulsen, Lynn Rae Perkins, Trevor Pryce, and Jon Scieszka.   Teens will be treated to Kwame Alexander, Libba Bray, Michael Buckley, Phillip Hoose, Cynthia Levinson, Sonia Manzano, Shelia P. Moses, Rachel Renee Russell, Laura Amy Schlitz, Sabaa Tahir, Meg Wolitzer, and winners of the reading and writing contests A Book That Shaped Me and Letters About Literature.

The 2015 event marks the 15th anniversary of this literary festival and the 200th anniversary of the Library of Congress's acquisition of Thomas Jefferson's personal library.

The Community Wellness Alliance is sponsoring the Saturday, April 18 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm community summit on how the Smoking Restriction Amendment Act impacts you and your community.   The event takes place at Raymond Recreation Center (3725 10th St NW).

Attendees will learn, for example, about the restrictions on smoking―none within 25 feet of DC government-maintained facilities including dog parks, community swimming pools, playgrounds, Metrorail stations, and bus stops.

DC gets Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity

April 6: Free open budget data webinar

Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT) is holding the webinar GIFT Open Budget Data Case Studies and Landscape Share Monday, April 6 at 11:00 am.

The purpose of the webinar is for GIFT researchers to share their findings

from three case studies of the use of open budget data as well as a fourth research effort landscaping the current state of affairs regarding open budget data. The three case studies are of open budget data use in the Mexico Transparency Portal, the Kenya Constituency Development Fund, and the city of Chicago, USA.

If there is interest, a discussion with webinar participants will follow.

April 2: Mayor Bowser releases proposed FY 2016 budget

Mayor Bowser will brief the Council of DC Thursday, April 2 at 11:00 am.   The briefing, which takes place in the Mayor's Ceremonial Room, 5th Floor, is open to the press.

The mayor will present the budget to the media and community Thursday, April 2 immediately following her meeting with the council.   This briefing takes place in the Press Briefing Room, G9, at the John A. Wilson Building (1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW).
