DC fails in disaster preparedness for kids. Again.

D.C., Virginia Lack Protections For Children In Event Of Disaster, Report Says recaps the latest children and disaster report from Save the Children, Get Ready. Get Safe. 2015 Disaster Report.   WAMU's Ashley Dejean reports,
D.C. and three states aren't doing enough for grade school students, according to Save the Children. The group says the District doesn't have what emergency management officials call a "multi-hazard plan" that's mandatory for all schools.

Unfortunately, not much has changed over the years in DC.   Save the Children has, since 2008, criticized the District for not ensuring children are protected when they are with someone other than their parents, such as when they are in school or childcare.

How safe will the District's children be when disaster strikes? was written in 2010.   How safe would DC's kids be in a disaster? was written in 2013 about the 2013 report.   And Save the Children emergency preparedness report findings: government and parents need to do more was written in 2014.

But the report does show progress in many states.   The image on the right (see page 13 of the report (PDF)) shows that while only four states met the four minimum standards in 2008; 32 states meet the four minimum standards today.

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society recently featured author and head of Andover John Palfrey at a talk.   Palfrey discussed his new book BiblioTech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever In An Age of Google.

According to the event site,

He argues that anyone seeking to participate in the 21st century needs to understand how to find and use the vast stores of information available online. Libraries play a crucial role in making these skills and information available — and yet are at risk. In order to survive our rapidly modernizing world and dwindling government funding, libraries must make the transition to a digital future as soon as possible—by digitizing print material and ensuring that born-digital material is publicly available online, while continuing to play the vital role as public spaces in our democracy that they have for hundreds of years.

July 30: Trash talk with DPW and MPD

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will be joined by representatives from the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to discuss how to achieve a "Litter Free DC" during a live Web chat on Thursday, July 30, 2015, from 12:00pm-1:00pm.

The chat will highlight DPW's current "Litter Free DC" campaign. Representatives from the DC Metropolitan Police Department will be available to answer any questions with regard to enforcement.

July 31: Family Support Council meeting, public invited

The inaugural meeting of the Family Support Council will take place Friday, July 31 from 10:00 am - Noon at Department on Disability Services (1125 15th St NW, 4th floor).   DDS is a 100% ID check building so photo ID is required to enter the building.   RSVP to Alison Whyte via email, or by phone, (202) 870-9640 to attend the meeting.   Contact Whyte to request accommodations needed for meaningful participation.   More information, including the event flyer, is on the DDS website.

What is the Family Support Council?   It was created by the DC Supporting Families Community of Practice to better support families and individuals.   The Family Support Council will assist, advise and provide recommendations to the following agencies:

  • Child and Family Services Agency
  • District of Columbia Office on Aging, Aging and Disability Resource Center
  • District of Columbia Public Schools
  • Department of Behavioral Health

Bonne chance Jeannette Mobley!

Ward 5 CM Kenyan McDuffie recently announced Jeannette Mobley, his CoS, is retiring.   About Mobley he wrote,
Over three years ago I had the distinct honor and pleasure of beginning my role as Councilmember in service to you. At my side then was one of the most respected women in Ward 5, Jeannette Mobley. Jeannette, who now serves as my Chief of Staff, promised me a year, or maybe two, just long enough for me to "get my feet wet." Now the time has come, and Jeannette has decided to retire.

Though Jeannette certainly can never be replaced, I am confident my staff will do its best to continue the work that Jeannette has started. In the meantime, I would like to invite you to bid a fond farewell to Jeannette this Friday, July 31, 6:30 pm at Busboys and Poets 625 Monroe St., NE.

DC history: People talk about the bombing of Pearl Harbor the day after

This recording is part of the Library of Congress's After the Day of Infamy: "Man-on-the-Street" interviews.   According to the website,

Following the Attack on Pearl Harbor presents approximately twelve hours of opinions recorded in the days and months following the bombing of Pearl Harbor from more than two hundred individuals in cities and towns across the United States. On December 8, 1941 (the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor), Alan Lomax, then "assistant in charge" of the Archive of American Folk Song (now the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center), sent a telegram to fieldworkers in ten different localities across the United States, asking them to collect "man-on-the-street" reactions of ordinary Americans to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the subsequent declaration of war by the United States.

Free pension and retirement benefits legal clinic August 12

The Pension Rights Center is hosting a free legal clinic about pension and retirement benefits Wednesday, August 12 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at Pension Rights Center (1350 Connecticut Ave NW, Suite 206; Dupont Circle metro station's South exit).

At this new clinic, people can talk with pro bono attorneys about a range of issues including how changes in the law can affect retirement plans.   The attorneys will also help sort out issues that arise in divorce proceedings, and explain retirement plan documents, help complete retirement plan benefit forms, track down retirement benefits from past employers, and address pension plan overpayments.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory which will go into effect at 1:00pm today. Expect heat index values to reach 109 due to temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s and dew points in the low to mid 70’s. Those with heat related illness, without air conditioning or those outdoors for extended periods of time please take all necessary precautions.

Does DC need universal child care? Take the survey.

The Childcare for All Coalition is exploring the need for universal childcare in the District of Columbia.   A major part of their exploration involves parents and other caregivers.

The coalition's survey, online here, asks about parent/caregiver work hours, the affordability of child care, whether the DC government and/or employers should do more to help parents, overall satisfaction with the care their children are getting, among other important issues.

Help your clients get a DC ID on their own

You can help your clients obtain a DC ID on their own by referring them to the Bread for the City workshop Wednesday, July 22 from 10:00 - 11:00 am.   The workshop will take place at Bread for the City's NW Center (1525 7th St NW).

The goal of this session will be to present basic information on the system for getting identifying documents in DC.   Those needing assistance are asked to arrive early to get an intake done before attending the session (the intake is preferred but not required for this particular workshop).

The session is in English only; Spanish-speaking DC residents with ID problems should visit Bread's Social Services walk-ins at the NW Center (1525 7th St NW) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:00 am and 1:00 - 3:00 pm.   Depending on the individual's immigrant status, there may be limited options and different documentation requirements.

Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8: Participate in the Vision Tour

Deputy Mayor Courtney Snowden is on a mission to stop in Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8 for organized discussions―known as the Community Vision Tour.   The official take on the tour:
Vision Tour Overview
The Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Development, Courtney R. Snowden, will host a Vision Tour with 6 stops in Wards 5-8 in order to: introduce herself and the office, inform residents of the agencies for which she manages, survey the interests and concerns of neighborhood residents and gather feedback and solutions from residents on how DMGEO and Mayor can better serve their communities. The sessions will host approximately 50 engaged and disengaged residents.

Vision Tour Purpose
The purpose of the Tour is to ensure residents partake in their city government’s decision making process. The DMGEO will listen and communicate with residents about how they envision the future of their communities. Topics of discussion will include education, jobs and job training opportunities, safety, health and wellness, and development of basic residential services. The Vision Tour will also educate residents on the role of government and how residents can hold government accountable in their communities in addition to equipping residents with the resources they need to help hold government officials accountable.

Help Safe Shores help kids and teens who have been abused start the new school year off right by donating school supplies.   Back to School Drive 2015! lists the supplies being collected, a link to their Amazon Wish List, the drop-off dates (through July 24), the drop-off location (Safe Shores, 429 O St NW), and contact information for staff in case you have questions.

Not sure how I missed that Patrick Canavan left St. Es for Paladin.   But thanks to WBJ's Tina Reed, I now know (see St. Elizabeths Hospital CEO has a new job — but he's not going far)!

New nonprofit news site dedicated to the education and ed reform

The 74 is a new news website dedicated to education in the United States.   The mission of this nonprofit "is to lead an honest, fact-based conversation about how to give America’s 74 million children under the age of 18 the education they deserve."

While the site is up, the site will launch news starting in mid-July according to this story.

How terrific is this?!   UDC's free workshop Thursday, July 16: Using Statistics to Understand Your Community.   According to UDC,

John Thompson heads to the ATL

You may recall that Dr. John Thompson has left DC government at the end of June.   For the past several years, Thompson ran the DC Office on Aging.

According to his Twitter profile, he is heading to the great state of Georgia to take over the Fulton County Aging and Youth Services Department.   Good luck John!
