Mayor Gray hosts Fort Stanton Community Day and ribbon cutting July 20

Mayor Gray will host Fort Stanton Community Day and cut the ribbon of the renovated Fort Stanton Recreation Center July 20 from Noon - 3:00 pm (1812 Erie St SE).   The release excerpted:
WHAT/WHO: Mayor Vincent C. Gray; Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry; Department of General Services (DGS) Director Brian Hanlon; Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Jesús Aguirre; other government officials; ANC 8B Commissioners Anthony Green, Charles Wilson, and Khadijah Watson (Chair); and Fort Stanton Civic Association President Barbara Jones will join Fort Stanton community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a celebration of Fort Stanton Community Day at the newly renovated Fort Stanton Recreation Center and Playground.

BACKGROUND: The newly renovated Fort Stanton Recreation Center is the first LEED Silver building in Ward 8. Amenities will include a gymnasium, fitness room, senior room, computer lab, multi-purpose room, teen/game room, kitchen and large foyer with natural light.

Fort Stanton playground is the 5th of 32 city-wide projects to be completed under the Play DC initiative. It is part of the District’s "Fort Circle" parks, which are built on grounds that formerly were part of the Union fortifications that ringed the District during the Civil War. The playground has a fort theme. All play equipment is custom-made, and amenities include a poured-in-place rubber surface, inclusive play equipment, climbing features and an ADA-compatible merry-go-round.
