Public meeting on vacant property tax proposals

CM Bowser (Ward 4) recently wrote in her weekly eletter Focus on 4 that on July 31 the City Council approved an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Support Act of 2009 that would lower the vacant property tax from $10 to $5 per $100 of assessed property value.   This amendment will become law, if again approved by the Council, on September 22.

Because of the many intricacies of this issue and because no public hearing was held, the CM is hosting an informal meeting to discuss the current law, the pending amendment, and alternative proposals.   The meeting will take place on September 16 at Emery Recreation Center (5801 Georgia Ave NW) from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.   Those who are unable to attend are being encouraged to submit written comments to Rob Hawkins, legislative counsel, at rhawkins [AT] dccouncil [DOT] us. Comments should be received no later than 5:30 pm September 14.

Why am I talking about this?   Vacant properties can have a negative influence on communities, communities where children, youth and their families live.
