DC Public Library cuts hours and services

DCPL announced on September 17 that effective October 5, the library will change hours of operation and some services.   The changes result from budget cuts made by Mayor Fenty and the City Council this summer.

The revised FY 2010 budget, expected to be approved on September 22, 2009, is nearly 11% less than the FY 2009 approved budget.   DCPL has operationalized the cuts in the following ways:

  • Library hours will change at all library locations.
  • Neighborhood libraries will no longer be open on Sundays.   Instead, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, which is currently closed on Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, will be open year-round on Sundays.
  • The library’s bookmobile will not operate in FY 2010.   However, Library staff will continue to visit schools to provide literacy support to students.
  • Later in October, the parking garage at MLK will no longer be available to the general public.
